Square icon framing

The output canvas is square. PNG keeps transparency; JPG has no transparent pixels to preserve.

How to create a favicon from an image

  1. Choose a square logo or another clear image in PNG, JPG/JPEG or WebP format.
  2. Use Fit the whole image to keep every edge and add transparent space around a non-square image, or choose Fill the square to crop from the center.
  3. Generate the files, inspect the size previews, then download the ICO, individual PNGs or the ZIP package.
  4. Place the files in your website's public root or another path you control, and use the matching file paths in your page's icon links.

This favicon maker creates icons from your image; it does not draw a new logo. The image is decoded and rendered locally in your browser. It is not sent to this site. If you want to make a favicon or create a favicon online free, the steps and downloads above cover that image-to-icon task.

Favicon ICO and PNG sizes

The generated favicon.ico is an ICO container with separate 16×16, 32×32, 48×48 and 256×256 PNG image entries. It is not a PNG file renamed to end in .ico. The PNG downloads include 16, 32, 48, 64, 128, 180, 192, 256 and 512 pixel square versions.

PNG uses lossless encoding and preserves the alpha channel. ICO can hold transparency too, but some older software may interpret icon formats differently. JPG source images are opaque; choosing “fit” may still add transparent padding around the source image.

How to make a favicon for a website

Download the files and copy the icon files to your own site's public files. A typical HTML setup can reference an ICO for broad browser support and a PNG for a specific size:

<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="/favicon-32x32.png">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="180x180" href="/apple-touch-icon-180x180.png">

Change the paths and filenames to match where you uploaded the files. This generator prepares the image files; it does not edit or upload to your website. The “ai favicon generator” phrase may describe tools that generate artwork, but this tool converts an image you supply and does not create AI artwork.

Favicon generator questions

Can I create a favicon online for free?

Yes. Choose an image, generate the icon files in your browser and download them. There is no sign-up and the image is not uploaded to this site. A favicon is a website's small favorite icon.

Which image formats can I use?

This page accepts PNG, JPG/JPEG and WebP files that the browser can decode. Other formats are not accepted here.

Can I create a favicon ICO?

Yes. The downloaded ICO has an ICO directory and four size entries containing PNG image data. It is not a PNG renamed as an ICO. The same page can make a favicon from an image for a website.

Will my favicon have a transparent background?

PNG transparency is preserved. With the fit option, any added square padding is transparent. Center-crop fills the square using the source pixels. JPG has no alpha channel.

Can I create a favicon from a non-square image?

Yes. Fit keeps the whole image and centers it on a transparent square. Center-crop fills the square and trims the longer dimension from its center.

Does this tool include AI favicon generation?

No. It converts an image you provide. It does not generate artwork from a text prompt.
