Flip image horizontally or vertically

A horizontal flip mirrors an image from left to right. A vertical flip mirrors it from top to bottom. This tool lets you turn either direction on or off; the preview updates after every change.

Flip and rotate are different operations. A flip mirrors the image, while a rotate turns it around an axis. Use the direction buttons above to choose the mirror effect you want.

What changes during a flip?

Flipping rearranges pixel positions. The GIMP manual specifically says its horizontal and vertical layer flip commands leave layer dimensions unchanged. That statement applies to those GIMP layer commands; it does not establish what every application does with other image properties.

In GIMP, Save stores a project as XCF, while Export is used to choose another file format. This page downloads a PNG after applying the selected flip in your browser.

Flip image questions

What does flip image horizontally mean?

It means mirroring the image from left to right. The left and right sides exchange positions.

What does flip image vertically mean?

It means mirroring the image from top to bottom. The top and bottom exchange positions.

Is flipping the same as rotating?

No. Flip is a mirror operation; rotate turns an image around an axis. They are separate operations in image editing manuals.

Does a flip change the image dimensions?

GIMP’s manual says its horizontal and vertical layer flip commands leave the layer dimensions unchanged.

Does a flip always preserve DPI/PPI or the file format?

The cited flip sources do not establish a general DPI/PPI rule. In GIMP, Save and Export are separate steps: Save uses XCF, and Export is where another file format is chosen.
