How to turn a GIF into a sprite sheet
- Choose one animated
.giffile. The tool reads the animation frames, including partial-frame updates. - Set how many columns the PNG should have. The remaining frames continue on the next row; the last row may have empty transparent cells.
- Check the numbered frame previews and sheet dimensions. If the frame order is wrong in the GIF itself, this tool does not rearrange it.
- Select Download PNG to save one sheet with the frames in playback order.
Frame order, dimensions, and transparency
The first displayed GIF frame goes in the top-left cell. Frames continue across each row and then move down. Each cell uses the GIF's logical-screen width and height, so a sheet with n frames and c columns is c × frame width by ceil(n ÷ c) × frame height. For example, four 48 × 40 frames with two columns make a 96 × 80 PNG.
Transparent pixels stay transparent in the PNG. GIF disposal rules can change what a later frame should show, so the tool composites frame updates before adding each full frame to the sheet. The sheet is PNG; this page does not create a JSON atlas, CSS animation, or individual frame files.
Choose the right sprite sheet tool
Starting from a GIF? Use this page to make one PNG from its animation frames. If you already have a static sprite sheet and need each cell as a separate image, use the sprite sheet splitter instead; it cuts regular grids into files and a ZIP. If you have separate still images and want to pack them into an atlas with coordinates, use the sprite sheet maker.
Limits
This first version accepts animated GIF files only. It keeps each frame at the GIF's logical-screen size and does not resize, trim transparent edges, skip frames, change frame timing, or add spacing. Very large animations can use substantial browser memory, so this tool stops files over 20 MB, animations over 100 frames, logical dimensions over 4,096 pixels per side, or sheets over 60 million pixels. These limits are checked before building the PNG.
Questions
Does the output keep the GIF's animation?
The downloaded file is a static PNG sprite sheet, not an animated image. Its cells contain the displayed GIF frames in order.
Are the frames uploaded?
No. The GIF is read and processed locally in your browser. The file itself is not sent to our server. The page may load the site's standard analytics, but those do not need the GIF file to create the sheet.
Why does the sheet have empty cells?
If the frame count is not divisible by your chosen column count, the final row has fewer frames. Its unused cells remain transparent.
