Instagram grid dimensions: original image and individual tiles
A 3 × 3 grid has three columns and three rows, making nine separate images. Plan the size of each tile first, then multiply across and down to find the size of the original image. All dimensions below are width × height.
Standard square: 3 × 3 grid
Each tile: 1080 × 1080 px.
Original image: 3240 × 3240 px.
Width: 1080 × 3 = 3240 px.
Height: 1080 × 3 = 3240 px.
Prepare a square image at these dimensions, keep Keep the photo's shape selected, and split it into 3 rows and 3 columns. Each of the nine pieces will be 1080 × 1080 px.
Portrait 4:5: 3 × 3 grid
Each tile: 1080 × 1350 px.
Original image: 3240 × 4050 px.
Width: 1080 × 3 = 3240 px.
Height: 1350 × 3 = 4050 px.
Prepare an image at these dimensions and split it into 3 rows and 3 columns. With Keep the photo's shape selected, the nine pieces will each be 1080 × 1350 px without a crop.
These are file dimensions for the tiles you create, not a guarantee of how Instagram displays profile thumbnails. Check the preview in Instagram before publishing.
Calculate the original image size for any grid
Tile dimensions × grid column and row counts = original image dimensions. Calculate the two axes separately:
- Original width = tile width × number of columns.
- Original height = tile height × number of rows.
For the reverse calculation, divide the original width by the number of columns and the original height by the number of rows. A 3240 × 4050 px original divided into 3 columns and 3 rows produces 1080 × 1350 px tiles.
Splitting does not enlarge or resize your photo. If the original is smaller, the pieces will be smaller too. If an edge does not divide evenly, some pieces can differ by 1 px. Use an original whose width and height divide evenly by your chosen column and row counts when you need identical tile dimensions.
How to make your nine-piece Instagram grid
1 · Prepare and select your image
Use 3240 × 3240 px for nine 1080 × 1080 px squares, or 3240 × 4050 px for nine 1080 × 1350 px portraits. Drop a PNG, JPG/JPEG or WebP image into the tool, or choose browse files.
2 · Set three rows and three columns
Use the 3 × 3 Grid preset. For an original already prepared to the right dimensions, leave Keep the photo's shape selected. Check the size information before splitting.
3 · Split, preview and download
Choose an output format and click Split images. Inspect all nine pieces, then download individual files or the ZIP. The image processing runs locally in your browser.
What if your original is not the right shape?
Keep the photo's shape cuts the image as supplied. For square tiles in a 3 × 3 grid, start with a square image.
For portrait tiles, Fit every piece to 4:5 center-crops the source before cutting. Read the crop preview to see what will be removed. This option sets the ratio, not a fixed resolution: it does not automatically turn a small image into 1080 × 1350 px tiles.
To keep all the pixels of a prepared 3240 × 4050 px original, use the default shape option and a 3 × 3 grid. If you need a different layout, the Instagram image splitter also explains carousel layouts, and the nine-piece guide covers arranging the pieces.
Instagram Grid Maker questions
What size image do I need for nine square tiles?
Use a 3240 × 3240 px original and split it into 3 rows and 3 columns. Each tile will be 1080 × 1080 px.
What size image do I need for nine 4:5 portrait tiles?
Use a 3240 × 4050 px original. A 3 × 3 split produces nine 1080 × 1350 px tiles.
Will the tool resize a smaller image to 1080 px-wide tiles?
No. The tool cuts the pixels in your original image; it does not upscale them. Prepare the original at the required dimensions before splitting if you need an exact output size.
Does choosing 4:5 guarantee 1080 × 1350 px output?
No. The 4:5 option controls the aspect ratio by cropping. The actual pixel dimensions depend on the source image and the number of rows and columns.
Can I download the nine pieces together?
Yes. After splitting, use the ZIP download button for the pieces. You can also download individual pieces from the results.
