Set rows and columns after choosing a file. Frames are numbered left to right, then top to bottom.

How to make a GIF from a sprite sheet

  1. Choose a PNG containing a regular grid of equally sized frames.
  2. Enter the exact number of rows and columns. The sheet width must divide evenly by the columns, and its height by the rows.
  3. Frames are numbered from left to right across each row, then top to bottom. Choose the first and last frame to play one continuous range in that order.
  4. Set a shared frame delay in milliseconds. Build the preview to see the encoded timing, then download the GIF.

Frame size, order, and timing example

For a 192 × 96 PNG arranged as 2 rows × 4 columns, each cell is 48 × 48 pixels. The tool numbers eight cells in row-major order: 1–4 across the top row, then 5–8 across the bottom. Selecting frames 2–6 plays five frames in that order, including every cell between the endpoints.

GIF stores frame delay in 10-millisecond units. A requested delay is rounded to the nearest 10 ms for encoding; the preview reports that encoded delay and the duration of one pass (selected frame count × encoded delay). The animation is set to loop continuously.

Transparency and color limits

PNG can contain partial transparency, but GIF supports only fully transparent or fully opaque pixels. During export, pixels with alpha at or below 127 become transparent; pixels above 127 become opaque. The tool reduces colors to one shared palette of at most 256 colors for the animation. This can change colors or create visible banding; check the downloaded GIF when exact colors matter.

Regular grids only

This tool does not detect frame boundaries, remove gutters, apply margins, or rearrange cells. A sheet with spacing, uneven cells, or packed irregular frames will not be split correctly by a row-and-column grid. Non-divisible dimensions are rejected instead of being stretched or silently cropped.

Choose the right tool

Starting with one static PNG sheet and need an animation? Use this page. If you need separate still PNGs from a sprite sheet, use the sprite sheet splitter. If your starting point is an animated GIF and you want one static sheet, use the GIF to sprite sheet converter; for individual PNG files, use GIF to frames.

Privacy and limits

The PNG is read and processed in your browser; it is not uploaded to our server. Files larger than 20 MB, an image side above 4,096 pixels, grids above 100 rows or columns, or selections above 100 frames are not supported. Large images may use substantial memory.

Questions

Can I choose a custom frame order?

This version plays a continuous range in the sheet's left-to-right, top-to-bottom order. It does not support arbitrary reordering.

Why does the GIF look different from my PNG?

GIF uses a palette of up to 256 colors and one-bit transparency. Color quantization and the transparency threshold can change pixels; PNG's partial alpha cannot be represented exactly.

What happens if the grid does not divide evenly?

The tool reports an error and does not crop, stretch, or encode the sheet.

Does the animation play once or loop?

The generated GIF is encoded to loop continuously. The displayed one-pass duration is the selected frame count multiplied by the encoded per-frame delay.
